Day 4

Monday, Sept 19 2011, Ottawa

I have most definitely caught the cough that has been plaguing our house (and likely will also be plaguing Martin's house). But I'm home and happy to be so.

Today began late for us. We were up at 7am, to overcast skies, clouds so low rain seemed imminent. We had our leisurely last morning pancake and two cups of coffee breakfast and were on the water for 9:30am, already having felt the first bits of rain.

The wind was blowing from the east, which made the first few kilometres from Killarney Lake to Freeland Lake harder. Maybe I'm getting old but I felt the strain in the ligaments of my forearm a few times pulling the paddle hard into the wind.

The closer we got to George Lake, the harder the rain came. By Freeland, it was steady. As we rounded the point and entered the bay wherein you find the George Lake canoe launch, it started bucketing.

It was pushing 11:30 and we were keen to be underway, so we skipped the customary post-trip swim, packed up, tied the canoe on the car and headed off, pausing briefly at the park office to change into clean clothes (left strategically in the car for this very purpose) and buy souvenirs for the kids at the fabulous Friends of Killarney boutique.

We were off toward home by 12:30. Between a stop for food in Sturgeon Falls and a bazillion construction delays, we were back in Ottawa by 7pm.
