This is what I told the MNR via their online consultation system about their pondering extending leases on cottages within the boundaries of Algonquin provincial park. In short: They’ve had a good run. And now they’re done.
I’m lead to understand that the Ministry of Natural Resources is contemplating extending the leases on cottages in Algonquin Provincial Park past the 2017 deadline.
As a long time user of the park and a cottage lover in general, I have to say, this is a mistake. There are lots of lakes to put cottages on, but Algonquin Park is unique.
Over the decades it has made its trip back from logging zone, resort community and farm and settlement land back to wilderness slowly but surely.
It seems to me the cottagers were given fair warning that their tenure would not be permanent and would indeed have to make way for the park to meet its true objectives.
They’ve had a good run. And now they’re done.
