Attawapiskat: laying out the numbers

This excellent explanation of what happened to the so-called millions sent to Attawapiskat all over my little corner of the internet, but I want to share it anyway. Another inbound hyperlink can't hurt, eh?

I was appalled to learn of the Harper government’s response to the crisis in Attawapiskat. For the government that blew $50 million in a month on a big national security party – complete with fake lake and deeply discounted civil rights – to admonish people living in poverty in abhorrent conditions for “wasting” $90 million over five years seemed to be the height of hypocrisy.

And even if the highly racialized government talking points on where fault lies in the Attawapiskat were based in fact, the hubris of the Jets n Jails crew would be enough to discount their point.

Turns out they spent it on schools, health care, fixing existing housing and a bunch of other stuff that municipalities usually spend money on.

This post points out that the government’s line is a massive distortion both in terms of the numbers and in terms of the Tories’ insinuation that the band itself is out of control and unaccountable.

No, the spin out of the government amounts to a further indignity for people who have already suffered far too much.
