André Cornellier has died

André Cornellier has died. I have had a lot of bad things to say about him, but I am truly sorry he’s gone. I send my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and union siblings.

He was the lightning rod for a lot of public anger against Ottawa bus drivers during their strike a few years ago. But I do admire his courage and his willingness to accept those blows and his determination to stay the course no matter how much rancour was directed his way.

I won’t change a word of my criticism of the way he dealt with the strike and public relations generally. But to actually take that stand, in the era of Larry O’Brien, when our federal political spectrum makes Joe Clark look like Lula Da Silva takes real courage – a courage oft lacking in leaders generally and in unions in particular.
