Linda McQuaig for prime minister

She points out, in her column on Paul Martin's deal with the NDP that what's really got the media and business in a lather is the fact that Canadians might actually like what they see.

After all, the $4.6 billion the NDP-Liberal deal will cost will get eaten up in next year’s surplus. It’s more just that Canadians are seeing that a government only gets held to account when it fears falling.

And in truth, spending more on social programs and less on corporate welfare is about accountability.

The liberals perpetually campaign from the left and rule from the right. On the hustings they sould like Lula. In power, they act like Nixon.

Because, of course, the Liberals never campaigned on cutting corporate taxes. They campaigned on increasing spending on human needs. That and fear of Stephen Harper.

I am hoping that the election does come relatively soon. I hope so because I think people won’t vote liberal out of fear of Stephen Harper but will rather see the wisdom of electing (even just a handful) more New Democrats so that we can reverse some of the damage done to this country over the last… oh… 20 years.
