…and spare me a June election. Face it, Paul, the corporate tax cuts that NDP leader Jack Layton wants gone are only about creating jobs in your media strategy. Once you get to the -30- at the end of your press release, it’s all about greed.
There are lots of people who know way more about taxation than me – Neil Brooks, Linda McQuaig, Bruce Campbell, Armine Yalnizian, Jim Stanford, but I know enough to say with certainty that just dropping the corporate tax rate won’t create jobs.
I could see dropping the tax rate on companies that were able to show employment growth from one year to the next. Or on companies that did a certain amount of retraining, opened new offices/plants etc or (and wouldn’t this be neat) reduced their energy consumption, pollution etc etc.
But just an across the board cut? No way.
If lower taxes create jobs, how come unemployment levels are still much higher today than when corporate income tax made up the majority of federal revenue (in the 60s and 70s).
Do the deal Paul. Forget about your wealthy friends.
