A bike ride

Not much of one, to be fair. Blackburn Hamlet and back – 53km all in. But considering I had to brush the cobwebs off the spokes of my road bike, I think it was a reasonable one. Yes, it’s been a long time since I got on my bike and rode, sans child.

In fact this week (or part thereof) is the longest I’ve been on my own without either Mallory or Irene since Mallory was born four and a half years ago.

I was on my way home from work yesterday when I ran into a friend and colleague at a Bridgehead where I’d stopped to buy beans. I’m so used to feeling tense and ‘needing to run’ to get to the daycare or get home to make dinner that my first thought was “oh shit, how am I going to be polite but extricate myself in time to be on time?” But then I remembered: no child to look after and I’m just cooking for me.

So I went over and babbled merrily until I got the impression that my friends needed to get back to what they were meeting about. I went home, made dinner and was noodling at the computer (I’m moving my server hosting to someone else’s part of ‘the cloud’ if you care) and I kept noticing that my ear was cocked towards the bedroom, listening for signs of a waking child.

Then I remembered there was no child there. I could get used to this.

Better not though, Mallory and Irene have moved their return date to Thursday now.
