Rogers, let me add my iPad to my data plan

Sometime soon my iPad is going to be arriving. I ordered it first thing first morning it was available. I’m not normally an early adopter, but this thing has me excited. I ordered the 3G one, with all the RAM. And for $0.20 I ordered a Rogers SIM card for it.

I see myself using the device in enough situations where Wifi won’t be available that getting the 3G model made sense. Beside, I read in the wee hours of the morning before making my decision, Rogers was going to let people add their iPad to their existing data plans. So I might finally start to get my money’s worth out of that insanely huge 6GB per month data plan Rogers made me sign up for when I got my iPhone. (To Rogers’s credit, they backed down from their initial proposal for data plans after much public pressure).

Only, now it seems I can’t.

Indeed, a day or so after people started pre-ordering iPads, that little tidbit about being able to add your iPad to an existing data plan disappeared from Apple’s website and Rogers official iPad website announces two separate iPad data plans only: too little for too much and too much for way too much.

I went with Rogers when first I got a cell phone because they had great taste in handsets. I’ve kept faith with them because they’re really no worse than anyone else in the biz, and they continue to have great taste in mobile devices.

But I’m quite fed up with this. They actually wanted $20 per month to let me use both devices on the one data plan. Now, I’m no telecommunications expert, but I have a feeling that it would actually cost Rogers nothing like $20 a month to let me do that. What an outrage that they won’t even let me pay them more money for nothing.

So her’s my bottom line Rogers: let me share my data plan between iPhone and iPad. I’d be willing to pay you something, though you better believe when my contract comes due I’ll be looking for a better deal for that too. But you cannot keep taking your customers for granted like this. You’re not the only game in town any more.

I’m on Bell and they haven’t even woken up that the uPas is coming out next week. I too am going with G3, but I’ll just get the SIMM and see if Bell eventually wakes up.
    Congrats

Hi Chris, this is Mary with Rogers online communications team.

Just came across your blog and wanted to let you know that we are looking into a shared data plan option for iPad. Unfortunately, this was posted to the Apply site before we were ready to discuss it as this option does take time to build. We’re also still examining how the option will be structured while at the same time making sure to protect our network quality. There’s a lot to consider because shared data between plans require a system investment and draws on our network in different ways.

You can read more about it here: http://redboard.rogers.com/2010/rogers-announces-data-plans-for-ipad-in-canada/comment-page-4/#comment-2803

    Take care!
