End of co-sleeping: the self-teaching method
Mallory announced this evening that she wanted to go to sleep on her own. All by herself. No grown-ups. She insisted.
So Irene got her all set up in her own bed, and left, returning only – at Mallory’s insistence – to close the door. Irene went to the bedroom next door (where Mallory and I normally co-sleep), pulled out her book and started reading.
Ten minutes later, Mallory called for mommy. She wanted to go to sleep with a parent. We weren’t actually counting on tonight being the end of co-sleeping so Irene went in to do the usual bedtime ritual.
But it’s neat to think that Mallory’s thinking about these things. We’ve done no lobbying, no real talking about sleeping on her own.
I only hope we haven’t just shown her how lonely and boring it is to go to sleep on her own so that she doesn’t try again til puberty.
