Hair: does it change the world?
I just got my hair cut off after about 20 years of having long hair and a few years of having freaky hair before that. Truth be told, I let my hair grow because I just didn’t know what to do with it and the world of fashion left me behind so long ago that it wasn’t even visible on the horizon. (Until I was 40 I was pretty much convinced that Doc Maartens were the only type of shoe on the planet).
Things I have noticed:
- My scarf feels funny on my neck.
- I look younger
- My cowlicks are still very much in evidence
- My hat fits better
- I need to find somewhere to donate it
Mallory hasn’t seen it yet. I asked her what she thought of the idea of me having short hair and at first she didn’t seem happy. But then I think she resigned herself to it. I actually think it will work out well for her because it won’t get in her way when we cuddle up at night.
Irene will like it because long hair is messy and very noticeable when it lands… anywhere.
Dad will be proud.
And as I told myself when I shaved off my wacky hair way back in the late eighties, hair doesn’t do a lot to change the world. And in fact, if you’re trying to make someone see your point of view, and they can’t see past your hair, it can just get in the way of change. Of course this time it’s about changing jobs, not necessarily changing the world, but no matter.

Dude, can a suit and tie be far behind?
That is an impressive cowlick!

Chris, you look fabulous – absolutely fabulous. As for donations, emma is considering chopping off her locks and donating them to Locks for love – a wig making outfit for kids who lose their hair due to illness or disease. I am sure there is an adult equivalent somewhere. Wow you look so young,… which of course you are.

Wow, Chris! You look wonderful. You really do. It’s a good thing I see the picture before I run into you because I probably would have cried. That’s what I did when I was four or so and my mom came home with new glasses. It’s still a very distinct memory. Good thing you warned Mallory. ;-)
But you still look like you.
And boy – were you ever a surly youngster.

Well, I’m looking, anyway. And you have to get in the frame of mind for making a change if you’re gonna do it. But then, you know that.
