Probation

What a joke. Michael Ignatieff is backing the Tories. In return for what? Regular updates on the economy.

I feel bad for him at a certain level. Such an ambitious gentleman as he is probably feeling a little upset that he’s going to end up as a caretaker leader like his predecessor because the party coffers can’t take an election. And so he’s told to prop up the government and bide time until the cheques come rolling in.

Only trouble is, the longer he sustains the Tories the less relevant he becomes and the slower and smaller the flow of funds. And the labels of “lame duck” and “loser” will start to stick and soon the knives will be out for him too.

Those Tory types out to destroy the Liberal party are quite likely dancing a little happy dance right now. Things really couldn’t be going better for them. They’ve survived their opposition leader’s public opinion honeymoon – indeed it’s got to be feeling a little like a hangover to the Liberals – and brought in a budget that promises spending in two years but gives handouts to their friends now.

The natural party of government looks a little bit like the party of natural selection right now.

    Sad but true.

The LPC capitulated, yet again, when they yanked Dion and appointed Ignatieff. The commitment to a coalition was the first time in four long years that the media actually started to criticize Harper and report leaks of grumblings among his caucus. Talks of a coalition made Harper ugly and defensive. It was the first time, in a long time, that the LPC had an upper hand.

Worst part is that it’s Canadians, especially the poor and wage earners, who are going to suffer.
