Sad about the leaves

Mallory’s had a cold and a cough for the last couple of days and for the second day in a row we got the call from her day care suggesting strongly we come get her.

So Irene dropped me off at the day care and I took her home. We spent a lot of time putting her stuffed animals to bed, having them wake up crying, comforting them, and putting them back to bed.

We did puzzles, read books, had snacks and generally had a low key but enjoyable time.

We had a bit of a stand off during the pre-bed pee part of the bedtime ritual, though. She just wouldn’t get on the toilet. Eventually despite her complaining I picked her up and put her on the toilet. She whimpered, had a pee and we got on to the story segment of the evening.

After her regulation two stories (the bathroom filibustre hadn’t gone on long enough to warrant fewer stories) I turned out the light. She whimpered a bit.

I asked her if she was sad. “Yes,” she whimpered. I figured she was still pissed at me for making her pee.

“What are you sad about?” I asked.

“I’m sad about the leaves.”
