Child care: we need what they have in Québec here

Fifty per cent less child poverty since they moved to $7 per day day care. Wow. It would be good to have that here in Ontario. For everyone.

When I was off with Mallory, I went to a lot of playgroups. Far and away the most popular topic of conversation was “what am I going to do when my parental leave ends.” The panicked search for child care was a common theme uniting all of us.

People were spending days phoning around trying to find care-givers, interviewing a dozen people, settling on one only to show up and find the house stinking of cigarette smoke and having to start all over again. Others were making complex arrangements to share a provider only to have them fall through at the last minute.

It’s total chaos. Almost haphazard. To think that this is how we care for our children. Can we not, as a society, do better? We definitely can. Québec shows us that.

The Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care has an online petition to get some action going on this. Sign it.
