The pooping puffin was no gaffe
…as the media seems to assume. It was good strategy.
- Put something outrageous on your attack site,
- Let the media know about it
- Wait for some buzz to happen
- Drive insane amounts of traffic to your site which would never have visited it otherwise.
- Blame some underling or contractor for being overzealous
- Be seen to do the right thing swiftly and unequivocally (easy since you already had the apology release in your drawer)
- Give your base a good morale boost (even they can see the good sense of apologizing for scat humour)
- Get interest in the rest of your site
- Come out looking like a statesman
Unfortunately, alexa.com and compete.com still don’t have the Tories’ anti-Dion site on their radar but I’d be willing to bet the puffin gambit earned them a lot more than they lost from the humourless vote.
