An axe blaze on life
For the last while I feel like I’ve been bashing through forest with no trail, trying to get somewhere important – or at least back to the path. My life has been quite full of Mallory, packing, purging, trying to sell our house and fix up our new one that I haven’t posted in weeks.
Any number of little incidents might have been fodder for a post, but there hasn’t been one that’s seemed worthy of putting down the packing tape and picking up the keyboard.
And so I write this to mark where I’ve gone in the last little bit so that if, in a month’s time, I’m still completely lost and at odds with where I’m supposed to go, I’ll know. An axe blaze in the middle of life’s forest, if you will.
So:
- Mallory had a blast at the cottage with her aunt, uncle and cousins. She almost cried once when she learned there were no more fried plantains. But that’s it.
- Mallory likes pretending we’re various other types of animals. Racoons, Koala bears, dogs, kitties, chickens. Every day comes with a frisson of excitement over what it’s to be today.
- Dad is feeling more energetic and less beset by the hot flashes. He goes in for another hormone therapy shot in September and we’ll see then how it’s affecting the prostate cancer.
- We still haven’t sold our house. Wanna buy? Motivated seller. Lovely parkland across the road. Dead end street, minutes from downtown.
- Packing is hell but I have uncovered some ancient photos from 20 or so years ago. When I get back in front of a computer with a scanner I hope to be able to share the embarassment
- The more I see of Russia and the other former Soviet republics, the more I miss the Soviet Union.
- The Olympics were worth watching back then too.
- I’m sorry to read that Jeremy Hinzman is being ordered to leave Canada. Courage for the road ahead and thank you for messing up your life to campaign against the endless war.

Great post, Chris! Thanks for catching us up. Can’t wait to see the old pics. And yes, exactly, re Jeremy Hinzman.
