Rogers does damage control on the iPhone

Two days before it launches, Rogers appears to be bowing to public pressure on its insanely bad iPhone packages.

They’ve come up with this “promotional pricing” for people who take their 3 year contract before August 31. To whit:

customers who activate by August 31 on a three year contract, a data-only offering of
6GB of data for $30 per month is being made available that can be added to any
in-market voice plan

No doubt the ruined iPhone petitioners will claim victory. They probably should.

So for me, with my $20/month next-to-no minutes voice plan, with $11 per month for stupid crap I need that should be free, adding $30 per month for data puts me at around $70 per month, which is still a lot. But it’s a much better deal than their current offerings.

I may just take the plunge because my current crappy phone never ceases to annoy me. On the other hand, I really don’t like the idea of being locked into anything gadget-like for three years. Especially the wireless racket, what with the bandwidth auction, the constantly changing technology and all that.

I apologize for the gadget post. I normally don’t post this sort of stuff but it’s been all over the media and no one seems to be picking up on this (limited, not life-changing but still significant) example of a corporation bending to public pressure.

More, more I say.
