TTC strike: media provides actual insight on ATU politics
Not that I get or have any insider information on ATU 113 politics, but I thought Coup at TTC union blamed for strike and TTC union bosses bitterly split had some remarkable insight into how that surpise strike in Toronto happened.
It’s not that the authors are that clever or managed to work their way into the confidences of the local’s membership or leadership. The story, I’m sure, was leaked to support, one side or another in the coup. From the articles’ slants, I’m guessing incumbent president Bob Kinnear’s.
It’s not that I couldn’t have sussed out from the superficial reporting of the facts over the weekend that something was up within the ATU 113 membership.
To me, the exciting thing is that someone at the Globe and the Star cares at all to look into this.
Maybe it’s like driving past a car accident (I’m sure Bro. Kinnear certainly feels like he’s been in some sort of accident these days) but I find this sort of stuff fascinating.
Unfortunately the mainstream media do not, and there really is no alternative media that would venture forth into the realm of union politics to report on what happened.
A few exceptions aside, union activists don’t blog. So there’s really no way to find out what’s going on.
So I for one am grateful that Jeff Gray and Rick Westhead – for whatever reason – suspended the usual MSM anti-union cynicism and waded in.
