My niece-in-law has a fan army

CBC did an item today on the fabulous kids at Churchill Alternative School who created 1,000 paper cranes and sent them to Anna who’s at CHEO battling Leukemia.

Now before I had a child myself I would have rolled my eyes at anyone who blogged such a feel good fluff piece as that. And when I was at the Toronto Star as an intern ages ago doing those sorts of sick kid stories was considered a form of ritual humiliation that interns had to go through.

Now that I have a child, and also possibly because Anna’s a member of my extended family, this sort of thing moves me to tears.

I read it on a good day, mind, as Mary just called to say that Anna’s latest round of chemotherapy has put the disease into remission.

I am no doctor, but I know that remission isn’t the same as cure. Nonetheless Anna’s odds with this treatment were pretty long so to know that this latest drug is working is to feel like someone you care for has just won a sort of lottery.

Inspiring to see kids initiate and complete such a lovely project. Great to hear that Anna has beaten the odds once again – that is one tough kiddie!

Is everyone feeling better at your end? Hope so.
