Putting things inside other things

Mallory with a box, Christmas 2006 At this stage of her life one of her favourite games is “make things disappear, then come back again.” She covers her face with something – a tea towel, a bib – then pulls it away. Hilarity ensues.

In her quieter, more contemplative moments, she puts something (a block, a facecloth, a finger puppet) in a box and closes the lid. Then, she opens the lid and peers inside to check to see if, as according to her hypothesis, the item inside the box magically disappears.

This is a good lesson to learn for her as it applies to her parents. Just because she cannot see them, it does not mean that they’ve disappeared.

For Mallory, yesterday was more people, and more boxes on which to try the “here, gone, here” experiment.
