Routers are from hell
After churning through three Linksys WRT54G routers, all of which failed at certain points, I gave up on them and bought a Netgear router, on the strength of them not being either Dlink or Linksys and on the recommendation of a friend of a friend.
On Friday, I started getting really problems from the router. I would get all kinds of page loading errors from web pages I hosted. Firefox said "Document contains no data".
Normally you see this when your server is under DDOS or just really heavily used.
But my server was just humming along at its normal load level. Restarts, plugging, unplugging, calls to Magma tech support, gave no insight into the situation.
I wasn’t being SYN_REC attacked. They weren’t having any network problems. My server hadn’t grown a bad disk.
So I put the (borrowed) plain old wired only Linksys router on the network and fired it up. Problems went away.
The normal lifespan for one of these routers seems to be about five months. At least, that’s how long the Netgear one lasted.
I think my next router is going to be IPTables on Fedora.
