Vars and the lying conniving weather network

103km out to Vars and back today. Supposedly 16C with scattered showers with slight wind. What rubbish.

More like enough wind to make me crawl along Russell Road at 20km an hour. Possibly gale force. Oh my God. There were so many times I wanted to stop.

Any frigging excuse. Fortunately being conscious of the frailty of my back I had one. The temperature dropped and my back started to stiffen up. So I conveniently needed to stop a lot to do stretches.

I hadn’t actually done this route before so I had no idea how long it was. And by the time I got to Walkley and St. Laurent I was into taking shortcuts.

So I decided to bike down St. Laurent. It probably shaved a couple of kilometres off the route but it’s a very ugly street indeed. Full of traffic, way wide and with not a lot of room for cyclists.

I was dismayed to look at my trip computer at the end to see the distance. It felt like a lot longer. I have a long way to go to prepare for the death march in June.

At least I made it. No flats. Back well-used but no pain. Drank lots of water. Overcame the desire to not-bike when confronted with rain.

Overall, a successful afternoon. Because I do need to get used to pedalling into wind.
