RLCT 2004: Here we go again

After riding the Rideau Lakes Cycle Tour last year, I wasn’t at all sure I was going to do it again. Which explains why this year I’ve signed up for the 225km per day version they call “The Challenge.”

More like “Highway to hell.” If Sunday was any indication.

I rode out to the Swan (about 69km all in) and back, along River Road then back through Manotick. And it felt fairly good, even though I haven’t been all that active this winter.

But coming back along Prince of Wales my legs just sort of forgot to pedal. Or they just ran out of energy. Or they forgot what sort of energy is required to meet my target speed/cadence combination of 30km/h and 90rpm.

I had left just after noon, without eating anything since 8am breakfast, and I was feeling hungry. Could that have been it? Or am just really out of shape? Why choose when you can have both?

The ride itself was just under three hours, with an average speed of 24km/h. I was pleased with myself for getting out there (two weeks earlier than last year), but boy do I have a long way to go if I’m going to take the long way to Kingston.
